Biography

Maria Karolina Ferdinanda of Habsburg-Lorraine, whose full name was Maria Karolina Ferdinanda Theresia Josepha Demetria, was born in Vienna on 8 April 1801. She was an Austrian archduchess from the House of Habsburg-Lorraine and the sixth daughter of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor, who became Emperor Francis I of Austria from 1804, and his second wife, Maria Theresa of Naples and Sicily. Through her marriage, she became Crown Princess of Saxony. She died in Dresden on 22 May 1832, leaving no children. Karolina Ferdinanda was the eighth of her parents’ twelve children. Only seven of the siblings reached adulthood; several died in early childhood, while two were severely physically or intellectually disabled. The name Karolina had already been given to two older sisters, both of whom died before she was born. Her father, Francis Joseph Charles, was the eldest son of Emperor Leopold II. In 1792, he became Francis II, the last Holy Roman Emperor. In 1804, he established the Austrian Empire and took the name Francis I. Her mother, Maria Theresa Carolina, came from the Bourbon royal house. She was a daughter of Ferdinand IV of Naples, who later ruled Naples and Sicily as Ferdinand I, and of the Habsburg archduchess Maria Carolina Louise. The family was closely connected to Europe’s ruling houses through numerous dynastic marriages. Karolina’s eldest sister, Maria Ludovika, married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1810 and became French Empress as Marie Louise; from 1817, she was Duchess of Parma. Her brother Ferdinand, despite his health and intellectual limitations, later became Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria and King Ferdinand V of Hungary. Her sister Maria Leopoldine married the Portuguese crown prince Peter in 1817; he later became Emperor Peter I of Brazil and King Peter IV of Portugal. Maria Clementine married Leopold Johann, Prince of Salerno, a son of King Ferdinand I of Naples and Sicily. Her younger brother Francis Charles married Sophie of Bavaria in 1824, and their eldest son later became Emperor Francis Joseph. Another sister, Maria Anna, was born with a severe intellectual disability and lived secluded from the public. On 26 September 1819, at the age of eighteen, Karolina Ferdinanda married the Saxon crown prince, Frederick Augustus, by proxy in Vienna. He was the son of Prince Maximilian of Saxony, from the Albertine branch of the House of Wettin, and the Bourbon princess Caroline Maria of Parma. The ceremonial wedding took place on 7 October 1819 in Dresden, the capital of the Kingdom of Saxony. Through this marriage, Karolina Ferdinanda became Crown Princess of Saxony, a position she held until her death. The marriage lasted thirteen years but remained childless. The surviving material records few details about her personal life at the Dresden court. In 1832, Karolina Ferdinanda fell ill at the age of thirty-one. She died on 22 May at Pillnitz Palace near Dresden. She was buried in the Catholic Court Church of the Dresden royal household. After her death, the widowed crown prince remarried as early as 24 April 1833. His second wife was the Bavarian princess Maria Anna Leopoldine, a daughter of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and the Baden princess Caroline Friederike Wilhelmine. In 1836, Frederick Augustus succeeded to the Saxon throne as King Frederick Augustus II. His second marriage also remained without children. The king died in an accident on 9 August 1854. As he left no children, his brother succeeded him on the Saxon throne as King John I.
