About this atlas
Method
Habsburg Online is a continuously expanding educational historical atlas. It connects people, family relationships and historical places through traceable identities and controlled publication rules. This page explains what the atlas can substantiate, how automation is used and where uncertainty remains.

Purpose and scope
The project is an educational, museum-editorial atlas rather than an academic critical edition. It includes rulers, partners, children, collateral branches and other people needed to understand the historical network around the House of Habsburg.
The atlas is not exhaustive. Missing pages or relationships do not mean that a person or connection did not exist; the corpus grows as identities and evidence are reconciled.
Sources and identity
A similar name is not treated as proof of identity. People are reconciled through stable identifiers, especially exact Wikidata QIDs, while names, titles, spelling variants and languages remain separate descriptive fields.
Institutional and primary sources are preferred where they are available. Wikipedia is used with an exact page and revision binding for active biographies. Official Kaisergruft profiles support room and Ort N° information. A cited source is evidence, not automatic permission to reproduce its text or images.
From discovery to publication
The research workflow separates discovery, cited data gathering and content creation. A research candidate, a promoted canonical Person and a published Person Page are different states. Discovery therefore never creates a public profile by itself.
Canonical parent and partner relationships are stored as graph records. Public views use bounded projections of promoted data and omit private claims, reviewer information and workflow history. Conflicting or malformed evidence is retained for review or excluded rather than silently guessed.
Biographies, languages and automation
German is the editorial reference language. Active English, Spanish, French and Italian biographies are tied to an exact active German revision. Public biography attribution identifies the relevant Wikipedia article and revision and records that the text was modified.
Automated systems assist research, drafting, translation and validation. Source rules, publication constraints and public presentation are defined by the project; Thomas Robak remains editorially responsible. Controlled validation is part of publication, and content can additionally receive human review. The project does not claim that every text has been fully edited by hand before publication.
Relationships, dates and uncertainty
Parent-to-child and partner links are stored once as typed relationships and displayed from the relevant direction. Historical dates can preserve alternatives, approximation, uncertainty and unknown values instead of forcing one apparently precise answer.
Where evidence conflicts or an identity cannot be resolved safely, the atlas marks the uncertainty, withholds the field or leaves the record unpublished. Plausibility is not used as a substitute for evidence.
Images, rights and provenance
Images are admitted only through recorded identity, provenance and rights checks. Existing portraits are preserved, unclear rights block publication, and public image credits expose the source and licence information available for that work.
Third-party text and media remain subject to their own licences and attribution requirements. A link or source reference does not place a work under the licence of Habsburg Online.
Kaisergruft placements
A historical Person and a physical placement in the Kaisergruft are separate records. Room, Ort N°, body, heart urn, shared container, memorial context and historical transfer can describe different aspects of one person.
The room inventory remains visible even when no canonical Person or published Person Page exists. When the exact form of physical presence is not established, the wording remains neutral rather than asserting that a complete body is buried there.
Accessible presentation
Essential public content is server-rendered and remains usable without JavaScript. Semantic headings, native controls, keyboard operation, visible focus and readable equivalents support the project target of WCAG 2.2 AA.
Limits and corrections
The atlas is a transparent, curated interpretation. It is not a complete genealogy, a legal record or proof beyond the sources and validation described here. Corrections and better sources are reviewed and incorporated as the atlas develops.

Reuse and licences
Different parts of the project have deliberately separate terms:
- Original editorial text: © Thomas Robak, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 unless otherwise stated.
- Project software: MIT License.
- Third-party images, quotations, source material and other marked works: the licence and attribution shown with the individual work apply.
- The Habsburg Online name and visual identity are not included in the content licence.
