Biography

Archduke Joseph Franz Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine was born on April 9, 1799, in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. He was the seventh child and second son of Francis II, the last Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and his second wife, Maria Theresa. His elder brother was Archduke Ferdinand. Joseph Franz thus belonged to the Austrian ruling family during a politically turbulent period, when Europe’s political order was undergoing fundamental change. His father, Francis II, had been Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire since 1792. In 1804, he additionally assumed the title of Emperor of Austria. Two years later, he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire because he feared that the growing influence of the French emperor would lead to a further expansion of his power. Joseph Franz experienced these political changes only as a small child. His mother, Maria Theresa, was the eldest daughter of Ferdinand, King of Naples and Sicily. She was named after her grandmother, Empress Maria Theresa. Joseph Franz’s parents were closely related: they were first cousins. For Francis II, it was his second marriage, after his first wife, a princess of Württemberg, had died in 1790 together with her unborn daughter. Joseph Franz’s family was large, but it also had to endure several early deaths. At the time of his birth, his sister Maria Karolina had already died. A few months after Joseph Franz’s birth, on June 30, 1799, his sister Karolina Ludovika also died. Five more siblings were born later. Joseph Franz was therefore one of several children of the ruling couple, some of whom lived only briefly. The year 1807 brought a series of severe tragedies for the family. On April 6, Maria Theresa, who was expecting her twelfth child, fell ill and gave birth prematurely to a daughter. The girl died on the same day. Only a few days later, on April 13, the empress herself also died. Joseph Franz therefore lost his mother at the age of eight. Soon afterward, the archduke also fell ill. Yellow fever is cited as a possible cause, while smallpox has likewise been suggested. On June 30, 1807, Joseph Franz died in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, just over two months after his mother’s death. He was only eight years old. His body was placed in the Imperial Crypt, the traditional burial place of his ruling family. The urn containing his heart is kept in the Augustinian Church in Vienna. Joseph Franz never held a political or military position and, because of his early death, was unable to develop an independent historical role. His short life nevertheless exemplifies the family history of the Austrian imperial house, marked by high child mortality and personal loss during the transition from the Holy Roman Empire to the Austrian Empire.
