Biography

Albert Salvator of Habsburg-Lorraine, also known as Albert Salvator of Habsburg-Tuscany, was born on November 22, 1871, in Alt Bunzlau, Austria-Hungary. He belonged to the House of Habsburg-Tuscany and held the titles of Archduke of Austria and Prince of Tuscany. His parents were Archduke Charles Salvator of Habsburg-Tuscany and Princess Marie Immaculata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Albert Salvator was the couple’s third son and fifth child overall among their ten children. His older siblings included his brothers Leopold Salvator and Francis Salvator, as well as his sisters Marie Therese and Caroline Marie. Francis Salvator later married Marie Valerie, a daughter of the Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph. After Albert’s birth, the family had five more children: Marie Antoinette, Marie Immaculata, Rainier Salvator, Henriette, and Ferdinand Salvator. Albert therefore grew up in a large Habsburg family whose dynastic relationships closely connected it with Europe’s leading princely houses. As befitted his background, Albert Salvator pursued a military career. In 1894, he became a Rittmeister and captain in the Austrian Hussar Regiment “Prince of Windisch-Graetz.” He was also honored with several important dynastic and court distinctions. In 1889, he became the 1,085th knight of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece. He was also a knight of the Bavarian Order of Saint Hubert and of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation of the House of Savoy. Albert Salvator never married. During the final months of his life, he suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis. At the beginning of February 1896, he was staying for the winter in Gries im Sellrain near Bolzano. His health deteriorated so severely there that there was no longer any hope of recovery. He could no longer leave his bed. One of the few diversions remaining to him was listening to a talented pianist who played in a neighboring room. Albert Salvator died in Bolzano on February 27, 1896, at the age of 24. His mother was with him and held him in her arms during his final moments. He was subsequently buried in the Ferdinandsgruft, part of the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna. His short life was shaped by his membership in an extensive ruling family, a military position within the Austrian monarchy, and a serious illness that brought about his early death.
